Winter occasions can be hard to buy for. Especially if you find you are invited to weddings and Christenings. Black is found everywhere for this season and these are the occasions you feel you should be wearing something light, cheerful and celebratory. I am a big fan of black and feel you can dress it up with colour, the other issue is your skin tone. If you don't want to be fake tanned to the extreme you need to be careful with the colours you are putting against your skin, if you are buying now try and imagine your skin tone a couple shades lighter especially if you have been away. We wear colours differently depending on our current looks, hair, skin and eye colour all have to be taken into account so if you are buying now for an occasion in 3 months time for example just think about whether or not you will go through any change.
Remember; always ask the bride if you can wear white, black or red at a wedding. these are traditionally not worn to weddings but if the bride allows it, thats fine. Also check what the bridesmaids are wearing.
I have been looking at dresses and separates for weddings in December as I am myself going to one, there are lots of options out there.
Deep yellow silk Massimo Dutti Dress. Perfect for an elegant evening wedding. Beautiful back detail with a paperboy waisted skirt detail.
I love this dress. Great for different body shapes, you don't need much else for this dress it is a statement in itself.
This reminds me of Belle from beauty and the beast dress. So if you want a Disney Princess look this is a perfect one for you. The sweetheart neckline is great for flattering for the bust, feminine waist detail great for a petite frame. Topshop's Pale blue, beautiful cool pastel for a winter wedding is perfect to team with a shearling white coat for a cool winter wedding look.
This cool muted Cos dress is beautifully subtle. Great high neck with an empire waistline. This dress would look very elegant with a nude court shoe or for an evening event try a platform shoe, nude to elongate the legs.
I had to add this Victoria Beckham dress, the colour is a lovely pop for a wedding guest gown, the high neck and long sleeve means that you are covered. The pleating detail on the waist will add volume to the hips. Big earrings and hair up will compliment this dress.
For a lower cost option this bright pink dress from Mango will give you a dress to remember, add a bright belt or sequin style for a christmassy feel.
This Sandro mini dress is a stunning colour, perfect for a winter evening wedding or christening. The mixed textures and high neck are great for a smaller bust and the a line skirt shape is great for wider hips. Wear with a pair of tights and court shoes for an elegant look.
Deep plum straight cut dress. Zara have added ruffles on the 3/4 sleeve for a touch of detail. This shape works for a straighter body shape and great legs, this colour works well with sparkle and metals so bling up this dress.
This Rixo dress is one of my favourites, I think it give an element of elegance and fun. The spot detail allows you to wear black at a wedding but you can also add great pops of colour with this dress, big belt detail. Hair is best quite smooth and sleek for this dress, you don't want to have too much going on with this.
Beautiful printed Zara dress, they have adapted the kimono style neckline with an empire waist. Great for ladies who are nursing babies going to weddings. I love the print on this dress, it is big and bold but not too in your face so you won't take the attention from the bridal party or the bride.
Remember to ask the bride, as the main colour is black.
This Whistles dress is again great for a smaller bust, it has an elegant open back on the lower back with a pleated skirt. The print is great for being subtle and allowing low contrast colourings to wear print. The greens and yellows make the dress tone lighter.
I would put this with a cropped jacket, maybe a thin shearling style.
Another printed style dress. This &other Stories dress is a full length, button up style with a capped sleeve, wrap dress works well for a bigger bust, the higher waist can create the image of waist under a bigger bust for ladies who have smaller hips, so if you are broader shouldered this dress work to minimise.
One for ladies who have legs. This printed mini dress is perfect if it's not too short. The belt gives accent to the waist on this Zara dress, this is great for ladies who are small and straight, it will help to give the illusion of a waist and bigger bust.
This beautifully elegant Massimo Dutti jumpsuit is simply stunning. It is part of their limited edition collection, it has open back detail and draping sleeve detail. The boat neckline allows women with a broader shoulder to wear it and also the draping sleeve draws attention towards the hip area.
Printed Kimono jumpsuit, wide neckline with 3/4 sleeves and large belt detail. This Zara jumpsuit is perfect for a winter wedding, the subtle muted green works well with the yellow flowers. Great for broad shoulders and to draw the eye to the legs.
Velvet Whistles jumpsuit, great neutral colouring with a cropped trouser, beautiful waist detail, could even be used for bridesmaids for a winter wedding. Frill detail and open back.
Whistles are loving their velvet this season, this deep navy blue jumpsuit is a gorgeous winter wedding piece, wear with a lighter shoe and clutch and a winter white cropped coat. Silver jewellery with semi precious stones would be stunning with this backless jumpsuit.
You don't have to wear all in ones to weddings, skirts and tops can work just as well to a wedding and sometimes you can make them more your style.
I have found a couple of Maje skirts for this wedding blog and they are pieces I could wear all the time. They can be used as an outfit builder for a wedding and also for day to day outfits. This skirt I would put with a silk top for a wedding with a cropped jacket and a pair of court shoes.
Skirt and top options can be better for ladies who are different sizes top and bottom, it will help to create the waist detail and this skirt draws attention away from the hips.
This is the other piece from Maje, this skirt can be made as fun as you like, the longer length may be more difficult to work with for smaller ladies but if it hits you in the right place it could be perfect, this fabulous pop of colour will draw attention to your hips but the black waist band will draw attention to your waist.
Jacquard skirt from Zara, structured shape below the knee. This pretty skirt would work with a variety of plain tops of double up the print. A long sleeve cropped boxy top would work well with this skirt as a smart wedding piece or a silky top.
This Zara outfit work so well as a whole, the skirt with a pretty print and light colouring, the deep top gives great contrast to the skirt and the pointed toe ankle boots with the sparkles compliment the outfit really well.
A few jackets just for fun
The first 2 jackets are from Zara, perfect for this seasons plain outfits for dress and over skirts. The shearling Whistles jacket is perfect for a winter wedding, icy white and warm!! The Maje coat would work perfectly over short dresses and jumpsuits or trouser suits; the animal print is subtle but gorgeous.
